Travel Destinations Through Monuments

Travel Destinations Through Monuments - student project

For this project I had a few initial concepts that I fleshed though. I started out with state birds unique to the Mid-Western states yet soon learned that a number of states shared the same bird. I soon found myself arriving at N. American Monumnets/Landmarks that would represent those cities. This developed into my current concept. Internation destinations that are signified through landmarks/monuments that have a close relation to the city.

I would like to illustrate the following destinaitons and represent them with their matching landmark/monument.

Paris - Eiffel Tower

Egypt - The Great Payramids or The Great Sphinx

India - The Taj Mahal

Moscow - St. Basil's Cathedral

Sydney - Sydney Opera House

Rio de Janero - Christo Redentor

China - The Great Wall of China

England - UK Parlament-Big Ben or Tower Bridge

Italy - Leaning Tower of Pisa or The Coliseum

Easter Island - Moai Statues

This direction excites me the most because I would like to visit these monuments in time. It also allowes me to learn the background of each monument.

Let me know what you think. Im excited to hear what you have to say.

Sketches soon to follow.

April 18, 2013

Conducted research and started sketching my selected landmarks. At first I was too literal when replicating the monuments. I reduced the number of elements and used only basic geometry.

I feel that the Taj Mahal is moving in the right direction. Along with the Leaning tower of Pisa. I've added extra elements that'll bring life to the badges and really help replication the location of the specific monuments.

Dig these pyramids and the clouds!!

In order for these to succeed I believe that I'll need to continue to reduce each monument down to its basic elements. I also feel that some icons require a close up view due to so much visual information. This can be seen in my sketch for St. Basil's.

Im happy with where these age going but need to keep it consistant. The fire is lit and Im excited to keep on reducing!

Im experiencing a little trouble with The Great Wall and Easter Island Moai Statues. I feel that the bottom three are moving in the right direction. Perhaps some feedback will help me out. Still haven't decided on the over all shape of the badges/icons. Im digging the circle with the little stitch but not sastified.
