Trademarks for games I'm interested in!

So first of all thank you for the informative class! I'm looking forward to listening/watching more of your classes.

Recently I started developing a table-top game that involves both traditional RPG and newer hobbyist board game elements. I wanted the game to be accessible to very young children, but targeted at the parents; something nerds could use to bring their young children into the fold so-to-speak. I didn't want to reinvent the wheel though... so I started doing some research.

I came across a game called "Hero Kids," developed by Hero Forge Games the company label for a man named Justin Halliday. I love it, so I thought I'd check to see if  it was trademarked for this project. I used http://www.uspto.gov/trademark to find what I was looking for. Here is a link to a basic search... there were not as many results as I would have thought: "Hero Kids" Trademark Search.

The closest one on the list is actually "Herokids," which is owned by a stamp company. I'm still not 100% clear on what the benefit of a Trademark would be for the company.

Since he hadn't bothered to trademark his game I looked up his company's name "Hero Forge Games" and that wasn't trademarked either. "Hero Forge" however is trademarked by a company that 3D prints custom miniatures.
