Too Heavy

3/7/14: I found this graphic in Wired Magazine.  This art is by Edel Rodriguez as seen in this article: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2014/01/how-the-us-almost-killed-the-internet/all/

original; scanned

3/25/14:  I've been having a lot of fun with this.  Here is my progress so far:

I still need to add the lines tethering the butterfly.  But, more importantly I'm trying to figure out the grunginess of the overall piece.

The background splotches were done with a clipping mask.  First you have to combine all the objects together with /object/compound path/make.  Then use that object on top of another layer and create a clipping mask.  I duplicated my background, used the mask and then played with the opacity to darken those areas.

Those background splotches would have been easy to do with some custom watercolor brushes I have in photoshop.  But, alas, you can't use those in illustrator...so I used the blob tool.

Comments and suggestions are more than welcome!

3/28/14: OK.  I think I am done with this one. The shading isn't exact, but I've copied it to the point that I learned how to do it.  I am a huge fan of Illustrator now...on to new projects...
