To Kill a Mockingbird

I've been a designer for 11 years, but I've never been an illustrator. Drawing has always terrified me. But. I love typography, and I decided my New Year's resolution this year was going to be to learn hand lettering. I don't care if I don't get good enough at it to market it to clients, but I wanted a different creative outlet that was not my day to day job and would provide some relaxation away from the scrren. I'm only a few months in, but I love it. Going to take years to perfect, but it's been a lot of fun.

For this project, I chose my favorite book, To Kill a Mockingbird. The tree on Scout's street plays an integral role in the book. Scout, Jem and Dill play on the tire swing for endless hours, but it is also where Boo Radley puts their little gifts. I decided I wanted the drop cap to be an organic plant shape that resembles the tree. At the end of the M's flourish would hang the tire swing. The rest I made to look like the leafy branches, and I did the background in brown for tree bark.

I'm including my initial sketch and my final product. I know the lines could be more perfectly curved, that is something that will take time, but I also think the imperfections work as no plant or tree are perfectly shaped.
