To Kill a Mockingbird Drop Cap

Hello!

I've decided to base my project on 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee. It is a book i've always wanted to read so thought this project would be a good reason.

I loved the book and felt inspired to get on with this project. So here goes!

My notes on the book:

I was playing with the idea of which letter to use but have decided to pursue the letter 'L'. The main concept i want to go with is the supposedly dying oak tree, which is filled with cement as i felt the imagery and its subtle mention throughtout the book were important to the evolvement of the character scout and Boo Radley. I also want to incorporate the mockingbird, as I really like the quote,

"i'd rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but i know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."

I feel this quote(a rather famous one for the book) symbolises the main themes behind the book.

Initial sketches

To begin with I looked at different letterforms for the letter L and drew out rough sketches of which ones i felt best represented the book.

Concept Sketches

These are the rough concept sketches. Now deciding which one to pursue. I might draw out a couple in more detail to get a better idea.

Digital Part

I decided to go with the last L design (the one with the tree roots and bird in the letter) Here are some progression images. This is about the third time i've ever used illustrator so where I am in the project isn't very finalised and immaculate but its a slow learning curve!
