The "waves" of the West Coast.

Hey everyone!

First of all, I want introduce myself and my story. My name is Hayley and I am currently in the middle of a four year Bachelor of Fashion Design and Technology in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Fashion and sewing have been a passion of mine since a young age so when I saw the ad for this course, I felt compelled to jump on it. I won't get to study draping in school until next fall but am always looking for new ways to challenge myself.

Coming from a technically based fashion background where the emphasis is placed on process work, I spent some time doing trend research. I decided to base my design around Fall/Winter 2015. The megatred of "Essence" calls society to "Look. Stop. Think. Details and time matter." They want people to go beneath the mass of detail and see the beauty in the everyday, transforming ordinary into extraordinary. I chose to produce my design in black as that is what I have available to me and I played with the idea of laser cut fabrics as shown in the images below.

Recently, I have grown interested in surface designs (ie. pleating and smocking) on fabric so that was my main inspiration for my design. I wanted to play with the idea of the waves that I am exposed to on the West Coast in the fall. In addition to that, I am a strong believer that the elements and principles of design can make or break a design. Therefore, I played with silhouette, repetition, texture and line.

I chose a leather-like laser cut polyurethane fabric to make a bustier out of. The overlay is a silk-cotton voile. The lining for both the bustier and the skirt will be a cotton material.

Let me know what you guys think!
