The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever - Jacques Cousteau

*Feb 3rd 2014

Hi Mary Kate, hi classmates!

I am back for round 2, yep, I am taking the second class too :). I hope to make it on time for the challenge! Fingers crossed! :D

For this one, I am working on one of my all time favorite quotes on the sea, which is something I am crazy about and it's by Mr. Jacques Cousteau:

The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever - Jacques Cousteau

A few of my sketches so far:

the first:

And then ended up going with this one:

The problem here is that the lines are too fine maybe.

So when inking, I tried to make them thicker and add decorations. I am still working on it as you can see.

What do you guys think so far? Thanks!

* Later this day:

I readjusted the weight of the letters and added some details.

I also drew, inked and scanned a couple of corals:

And changed the layout to this:

My color palette look like this:

What do you think so far? Any advice on the letterforms?

Thank you very much!

Colorizing: right after this I started colorizing the lettering and made 4 versions. I had even added textures to one of the propositions:

textures 2, watery textures:

texture 3: old wet paper taken from my library of textures. I didn't make this one, I found it on the internet a while back.

So this is how the first version of my lettering came out:

Then I read Mary Kate's comment and realized she was right: I need to work on the center bar of the E and the rope/anchor and coral as a background.

Therefore made the said modifications and it turned out like this:

I proceeded with completing the first color option with the various textures and it looks like this,

What do you think so far?

I think am going to work on the other color versions in the meantime.

Later that evening:

Out of all the color variations, I think I am prefering the white/blue version. With the texture it turns really vintage. What do you think?

I am still on time for the challenge. So this is my final :D

Thank you Mary Kate for this super duper class, pure gold! Grazie mille! :D
