The man o' independent mind, he looks and laughs at a' that.

Im writing from Scotland where we're in the midst of the biggest political upheaval, certainly since I was born, if not further. After a narrowly fought independence referendum, in which we narrowly turned down self-rule, the national elections have seen us return an overwhelming majority for the Scottish Nationalist Party - despite the indy referendum defeat - elected on a pro-equality left-leaning manifesto. This is contrasted with the shift to the right that the rest of the country experienced, with the right-wing Conservative party returning a majority to Parliament.

During the independence referendum, in the Yes campaign, we saw an amazing side of Scotland: food banks were inundated with donations; the amazing work of National Collective brought the independence debate across Scotland with an interesting and diverse cultural programme; politics were openly discussed and examined in a range of settings.

Robert Burns is Scotlands national poet. Born 1759 in Ayrshire in Scotland, he was an advocate of Scottish nationalism and socialism. One of his most famous poems is For a' That and a' Thatan ode to equality and looking beyond the rank of the man.

Stanza copied below.

Ye see yon birkie, ca'd a lord

Wha struts, an' stares, an' a' that;

Tho' hundreds worship at his word,

He's but a coof for a' that:

For a' that, an' a' that,

His riband, star, an' a' that,

My crappy translation:

You see that cocky ass called a lord

Who struts and stares and all that.

Though hundreds worship at his word,

He's but a dolt for all that,

For all that, and all that,

His riband, medals and all that,

The man of independent mind,

He looks and laughs at all that.

I'm planning on using the last 2 lines, capitalised in the Scots one as my basis phrase for the lettering. It's a positive, almost rebellious phrase, rooted in ideas of equality and fairness.

I'm a web designer and developer by trade, so I'm wanting this to be a digital banner for my homepage, but I'm interested in the remediation of traditional media in digital, so I'll be looking at some older things as well.
