Always learning.

The grass is greener where you water it.

I had a hard time choosing a quote for this project; there are so many that I love. But I finally settled on this one:

“The grass is greener where you water it.” — Neil Barringham

I want to be intentional, in 2016, about not waiting for circumstances to become more favourable before my life can begin. The life I've been waiting for has been going on this whole time, and it's time to take hold.

Here are my practice sheets so far. I have a hard time getting my lines to be parallel, and my curves to be consistently round (instead of lopsided or sort of pointy).

And here are some thumbnail sketches for the layout. I'm leaning toward the third one down on the right side.

I did some more practice sheets. I really struggle with the Os! I can't seem to get them consistent.

And then I worked on my top two layouts from the thumbnail sketches, tweaking them as I went along.

I got to this point and couldn't decide which one to do as the final piece, so I decided to sleep on it.

The next day I did more practice to warm up:

I looked back at my two layouts, and decided to try to combine my favourite elements of each one into the final layout. This took several rounds of tweaking, and drawing adjustments over the layout, and tweaking again. When I got to the point where I was fairly happy with it, I did a test in green watercolour.

Here is execution of the final.

I like this quote by Robert Louis Stevenson. Still need a lot of practice, and had some trouble with the ink globbing.

Did another one with this quote that I love, by Katherine Anne Porter.
