The Village Idiot

UPDATE 7/20/2014

1) I chose the poem Frank Drummer from the Spoon River Anthology because many people jump to conclusions about a person without actually knowing the person. Frank was a mute man, who because he couldn't talk, the village thought he was stupid.

OUT of a cell into this darkened space—
The end at twenty-five!
My tongue could not speak what stirred within me,
And the village thought me a fool.
Yet at the start there was a clear vision,
A high and urgent purpose in my soul
Which drove me on trying to memorize
The Encyclopedia Britannica!

2) FINAL DRAFT:

The Village Idiot

3) Logline: When a mute deaf man is about to be executed for a crime he didn't commit, he gets the last laugh and proves that he wasn't the village idiot.

I want to thank everyone that commented and gave me food for thought. I'm sorry I wasn't as active here as I had hoped. I'm on a book deadline and it's looming over me something fierce!

Best of luck to everyone here! I hope you all keep on writing!

UPDATE: 7/13/14

Finally finished draft 1. It didn't go the way I had originally envisioned. I thought about the budget and decided it was going to be just Frank in his jail cell awaiting his death.

If I had a longer script (and an actual budget) - there would be much more I could put in. I may expand upon it on my own - turn it into a feature with Frank defending himself behind bars - getting free - and he and momma go to Italy.

Logline: When a mute deaf man is about to be executed for a crime he didn't commit, he gets the last laugh and proves that he wasn't the Village Idiot.

As I wrote it I saw Forest Gump & his mom in my head.

It's not easy writing a deaf mute 1 character script! Let me know your thoughts!

Update (1:13 pm et) - fixed the typos (thanks Melinda).

(5:00 pm et) - took out the fingers in ear & hearing reference. (thanks Steve)

I chose the poem Frank Drummer from the Spoon River Anthology because many people jump to conclusions about a person without actually knowing the person. Frank was a mute man, who because he couldn't talk, the village thought he was stupid. Frank was actually brilliant who knew he had a higher purpose in life. He didn't know what his purpose consisted of, so to be prepared for anything, he memorized the Encyclopedia Britannica!

I'm going to focus on Frank using his knowledge (from the encyclepedia) to carve out a life no one thought he could have -- proving that what people thought of him was wrong.
