The Story Is Our Escort

For my first calligraphy project, I chose a part of a quote from Chinua Achebe I wrote down once and remembered since. After writing it down countless times and finishing my project, I discovered I remembered it wrong, but I'll stick with my version for now. I wrote the sentence down somewhere during my degree in literature and I love how it places stories in the midst of our lives and beings. This is the quote:

"The story is our escort; without it, we are blind. Does the blind man own his escort? No, neither do we the story; rather, it is the story that owns us."

I mixed and matched and used: "The story is our escort – without it we are nothing."

Here are a few of my sketches. I inked in all the sketches too, because I wanted to practice inking the different styles as opposed to only writing them in pencil.

I really liked the second one because it mixes the traditional feel of calligraphy with a very modern font, but chose to make my final piece based on the first sketch because that's the type of calligraphy this course has focused most on.

After the first stroke I discovered why you should always test your paper: this paper bleeds a lot. But I kind of like the effect, gives the traditional calligraphic style an edge, so I left it. I like the contrast between the style of the body text and the signature. Ideally, I'd lowered the body text moved the signature up just a bit. Also, the spacing in "are" is a bit much, but overall I'm pretty satisfied with my first try. Loved doing it!
