The Orange Room

TWO WEEK PATTERN DESIGN CHALLENGE

INTRO

I'm very excited to be participating in the 2 Week Design Challenge hosted by Elizabeth and the Skillshare Community. I've done a few surface pattern designs and the classes that go along with them but I really admire Elizabeth's style and am excited to be guided through the design process by her. Designing a pattern in bite sized chunks will help me to refine my techniques and my methods so I can really hone in on my style. After the design challenge I would love to be able to take my pattern and build off it, maybe creating a mini-collection!

I have to admit that the stunning girl in the cover photo is my sister, not me. Just look at that sass! This picture was taken in my grandparents house, in what was called The Orange Room. They also had a pink room, a green room, and a fascinating green/brown room that were all wallpapered accordingly. Orange is my favourite colour, and the orange room was where I would sleep when I would stay at Grandma and Grandpa's house (we lived across the road from them, so it was a special occasion kinda thing). I love the bold florals in this wallpaper and the kinda carefree feeling it gives me when I look at it.

I think I will need to add another foliage option but I like the three flowers that I have so far. I can always change scale, rotate them, expand them, just play in illustrator.

I'm not sure I'm entirely happy with these flowers but I do like the foliage. Here's a second try without colouring. I was getting ahead of myself. Some of these are scaled down quite a bit, like the two at bottom left.

PATTERN BLOCK AND PATTERN REPEAT

I'm quite pleased with how this turned out. Unfortunately I couldn't do the full 3 x 5 pattern repeat and get the file small enough to upload. So I did a 3 x 3 instead. I'd also love to learn how to add a gold fleck to this design.

Feedback and constructive criticisms welcome! I'm looking to improve this design even more.
