The theme of this poem is the fleetingness of beauty. The "Maiden" is the main character of the poem. She comes to St. Winefred's Well, a Welsh holy site whose waters are reported to have healing properties.

The young maiden comes to the well to look for a cure for aging and for a way to preserve her youthful beauty forever. Eventually, she cries out in despair when she realizes there is no earthly cure and that eventually she will die.

Her cry echos in the well but what she hears is not a repeat of her own voice. In fact, the well begins to speak to her, assuring her that there is a way to preserve beauty forever, that is the beauty of the soul---by giving it back to its source, which is God. In this way "the lead" of this quickly passing temporal life can be turned into the "gold" of eternal life.
