The King's Last Week

I continued working on the piece I started in Lettering I.

I chose to letter a phrase that will be the title of our next series at church, leading up to Easter. Concept is as it sounds, Jesus' last week. If it goes well, perhaps we will use it for the series graphic.

Smudgy process sketches, but I'm eager now to get inking. Definitely more time consuming process that I expected but completely worth the time investment. It's a really fun process! I'm loving this style and getting my hands dirty (literally).

I've inked this over and over and over again tweaking as I go. I've definitely found quite a bit that needed to be redrawn. In hindsight, I probably should have gone back and just redrawn it in pencil, but I just plowed through and tweaked in the inking and spent a LOT of time at the light table.

This the first round inking. I dind't like that my lettering lines weren't running parallell with the frame, and the frame wasn't square. I tried to tweak it digitally, but it just wasn't the right move, so I went back to the drawing board and changed some things as I re-inked pieces.

I broke up the inking into two different parts this time. And even though the lettering isn't centered in the frame, that's something that (I think) I'm comfortable with tweaking digitally.

I also modified the frame and simplified it a bit. I'm not sure if I like it better or not yet. We will see.

Here's where I landed with a digital comp I'm processing. Would love to hear your thoughts on what you like or areas to improve.

This is the color I landed on after many trials and errors...

And in application, I worked together with a couple colleagues to do some composite work. We have a bible in our office from the mid-late 1800's that is absolutely gorgeous and perfect. Here are the results from our compositing. Sufficie it to say I prefer lettering to composite work.
