The King of Ideas

INT. SHABBY APARTMENT - MORNING

GEORGE, 25 years young quickly darts around the apartment. Grabbing things, looking at them, then putting them down. All while talking to himself.

                                                       GEORGE

                                           Do I have everything?

He opens his messenger bag and feels around in his pockets. Satisfied, he strides towards the door but a loud knock is heard before George can open it.

                                                       GEORGE

                                     Who is it?

George waits a moment, hears nothing. So he calls out again, louder.

                                                      GEORGE

                                   Hello?!

Still no answer, George tip-toes closer to the door and looks through the peephole. No on is there, George slowly opens the door.

                                                     GEORGE

                                  Shit.

On the other side of the door stands Joe Welling, early 30's small build but with the   intense energy of a giant.

                                                         JOE

Good day Mr. Willard! And yes, I don't care

if you're not happy to see me.

Joe manages to step around George, walking right into his apartment as if no one is standing there.

                                                         JOE

You might want to think about cleaning

up before you have company over.

                                                     GEORGE

                                I didn't invite you over.

                                                        JOE

                                I'm just saying, that's all. It's a great morning isn't it?

I don't know why I asked, who could argue that's not a great

morning. Mornings like this make the town look great.

George is somewhat amazed at the small man's intensity but tries to stay on track.

                                                  GEORGE

Is there something you needed? I was just

                               about to leave for work.

Joe cuts off George's sentence and dives into the conversation.

                                                     JOE

That's a great job you got for yourself. You know,

I could have been you? Or is it you could have been me?

                                                  GEORGE

There's no way that you could survive the Eagle.

They'd fire you in a day.

                                                     JOE

                             How do you figure?

                                                 GEORGE

For one thing, you have too many ideas.

You're always trying to change things.

                                                      JOE

Improve!I'm always trying to improve things and

what good is having the best ideas in town if they never

                              get used?

                                                  GEORGE

The Eagle is a paper, a town paper. It's run in a certain way.

                                                     JOE

You've got to trust me, change comes from within.

The two of laugh, George realizes Joe isn't leaving so he closes the door.

                                                     JOE (continued)

Just so you know, I could have joined The Eagle but print

is dead plus I really like making money.

                                                    GEORGE

Which is why you live here right?

                                                       JOE

                              You're a funny guy.

                                                   GEORGE

I love these talks but I kind of feel like you

                             want to get me fired.

                                                       JOE

Heck no! Who's going to manage this shitty building?

                                                     GEORGE

Yeah, but you live here too.

                                                        JOE

                         Alright. Truce.

                                                     GEORGE

Truce. Now will you get the hell out of here so I can go to work?

The two men head to the door. Then Joe whirls around.

                                                         JOE

Now remember, I'll be coming by this evening to go over the plan.

                                                     GEORGE

OK! Now can I please go to work?

Joe quickly walks out the door.

INT. SHABBY APARTMENT  - EVENING

George wearily enters his apartment and starts to sit down on the coach. Just as he does, there's a loud knock at the door.

                                                    GEORGE

                           Who is it?

                                                        JOE

                                                       (O.C.)

                            It's Joe!

George sighs and answers the door. Joe walks in mumbling.

                                                       JOE

                                                   (mumbling)

It's the same guy that told you he was coming by this evening.

                                                   GEORGE

                           Did you say something?

                                                        JOE

                           What? No.

                                                    GEORGE

Are you sure you want to do this?

                                                       JOE

Why would you ask me that when you know how I feel.

                                                    GEORGE

Because the Kings are craziest family in Winesburg.

                                                       JOE

Don't talk about Susan that way. You know I love her.

                                                     GEORGE

I'm not talking about Susan. You know who I'm talking about.

                                                      JOE

I know. I heard Tom killed a man with his bare hands.

                                                     GEORGE

That's a rumor, he was never convicted.

But he still as dangerous as his old man.

                                                       JOE

You just got to know how to talk to them.

                                                      GEORGE

                        Any ideas?

                                                       JOE

Well I thought you would have some.

                                                    GEORGE

Why did you come over then?

You know what, nevermind, I have an idea.

                                                        JOE

                         Go on.

                                                    GEORGE

OK, picture this. What if, you talk to them in a public place-

Joe abruptly cuts George off mid-sentence.

                                                       JOE

No! That's all wrong. A public place? This is passion,

love and destiny. It has to be an intimate setting.

                                                     GEORGE

If this is going to be 2 hours of you shooting down my ideas

we might as well stop now.

                                                       JOE

Don't worry, your integral to the forming the plan.

The hours slowly creep by while George and Joe work on the plan. Diagrams and charts, are drawn, Joe paces back and forth, George angrily pounds his fist on the coffee table.

                                                    GEORGE

I've got it! Your apartment, dimly lit, the three of you

quietly sit down to the discuss the matter at hand. I will

listen on the other side of the door.

Joe slowly turns towards George, a wild tinkle in his eyes. With thunder in his heart he shoots his finger into the sky.

                                                       JOE

I like where this is headed! Keep going!

George slowly sits back in the couch proudly.

                                                     GEORGE

                          That's it. That's the plan.

George begins to pace again, mumbling to himself, rubbing his chin like a wise old man pondering the question of life.

                                                       JOE

                                              (mumbling)

                           I see. That's a pretty good plan.

Joe starts silently mimic how he believes the conversation would go, playing all three characters. George looks on in disbelief of the situation.

                                                    GEORGE

                           Are you OK?

Joe stands upright and straightens out his face.

                                                        JOE

I've got it all planned out in my head.

I told you, I'm the king of ideas.

                                                    GEORGE

But I actually thought of it.

                                                         JOE

You're absolutely right and I don't want to take anything away

from you but that idea sucked. I had to massage it slowly, gently.

To get it to take shape. Now, it's ready for production!

Joe throws his hand out towards George for a shake, with that mad glimmer in his eyes. George slowly stands up and shakes his hand.

                                                       GEORGE

                       Does this mean you're leaving?

Joe grabs his belt and hikes up his pants.

                                                          JOE

Yep! All in a day's work.

The two head towards the door. While Joe walks in front of him, George cracks a smile, glad that the night is over.

                                                         JOE (continued)

Now remember, this all happening tomorrow night.

So I need you to be ready and alert. Do you think you can handle this?

                                                       GEORGE

                                                   (wearily)

                       Yes, yes.

George opens, Joe starts to walk through it but turns around with a big smile on his face for one last statement.

                                                           JOE

Can I say one last thing?

                                                        GEORGE

                      Fine, go ahead!

                                                           JOE

Please call the police if you hear any unusual sounds tomorrow night.

George shoves Joe through the door and closes it, then walks away.

                                                           THE END
