The Jungle Book Remix

I chose The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling.  I loved all these stories as a little girl.

A little bit about the book.

The Jungle Book was published in 1894 by Rudyard Kipling. As short stories they first appeared in magazines from 1893-1894. Some of the illustrations that accompanied the short stories were done by Kipling’s father a Mr. John Lockwood Kipling.  Rudyard was born in India and spent his first six years of life there and later returned after spending ten years in England. He stayed for another six and a half years in India though, the stories were written when he lived in Vermont and are said to be for his daughter who passed away at six years of age. According to sources, Kipling put everything he knew and had heard about India into this book.

Here is a pic of the first edition cover.

Here are a few of the covers that I found during my research. I am not fond of all of them but I like elements from several.

I am interested in paying homage to John Lockwood Kiplings illustrations from the book. Here are a few examples.

I love his use of ornamentation. But, I want the cover to also have a modern feel, and at the same time, maintain the fable/fairy tale quality of the book.

I am going to reread the book tonight. Though, I have a pretty clear picture in my mind as to what I want to do.

Cheers for now! I hope that you all are having as much fun with your projects as I am having with mine. :)

I have looked at some stock that might work for what I have in mind. I am really bad about designing in photoshop and skipping the thumbnail part. I have a need to move things around. Anyway, here are some images that I would like to work with.

This is a stunning image all by its self.

Beautiful designs that could possibly make a frame. I think that theses would work well with John Kipling's illustrations. I would like to highlight India as a nod to Kipling's love of the country. In this design theme a series could involve different animals from the book in photos like this one. I would love for the spines to make a jungle when put together. I am new to photoshop so this will test my limits and most certainly teach me some great skills.

Here are some more of John Kipling's illustrations.

I usually try to make at least two different versions of the cover this might work for another one. On this version I want to play with silhouettes of the animals themselves in some way. Please excuse the terrible green background I just needed the vines to show up.

I am in love with this design and this book is a birthday gift from my in-laws.

Well that is it for the moment. I am going to work on it some this week. :) I might also try for a third option if I have the time.
