The Imperial Pug

As soon as I saw the project was based on "your favorite animal" I had to go with pugs. My husband and I adopted our first pug, Otto, 10 years ago and imediately fell in love with the breed. Our "daughter" Kat came into our lives 4 years later.

Brainstorming began with a break down of the breed's history (using a Mind Map). Having recently traveled to Asia I was instantly drawn to the idea that pugs were once the prized possessions of Chinese Emperors. This is where the final text choice "Imperial Pug" came from.

For the second step I created mood board using vintage Chinese packaging design samples, Chinese postage stamps and Chinese currency. I also began to look at Chinese shadow puppets and cut paper designs.

Next step was to play around with compositions through thumbnails . . .

I chose two of the thumbnails to render in detail. For the final step I would upload the images into Illustrator to create the full color vector designs.

This second sketch may also have the option of to be finished as a cut paper design.
