The Hummingbird Project

Namaste (hello) WordPress friends,

My husband and I run a small non-profit called The Hummingbird Project which specializes in implementing sustainability initiatives in resource poor settings. For the past 3 years, we have been collaborating with Navdanya, an Indian NGO dedicated to organic agriculture and seed saving. We have just returned from India where we worked for the past 6 months training farmers on organic agriculture in what is known as the 'suicide belt'. We were able to set-up 2 soil labs and train over 1,000 farmers in the last year on how to cultivate a healthy, organic, living soil.

In addition to working with farmers in India, we also have sustainability projects in East Africa. One project in particular is collaborating with a women's group which is dedicated to empowering women by giving them a hand up, instead of a hand out. Our collaborative project is to drill a borehole in south-central Uganda which will serve over 6,000 people. It will serve as the primary clean water source for the village as the nearest borehole is one and a half kilometers away. This initiative was proposed and will be maintained by the villagers, creating a sense of ownership and helping to ensure the project's long term success. The borehole will tremendously improve the lives of 6,000 villagers, especially the women and children who currently have to walk and carry each family's water one and a half kilometers!

I am trying to learn WordPress in order to efficiently update our community of family, friends, collaborators & donors on our projects.
