The Fault in Our Stars Drop Cap

Thank you for all the feedback. I really appreciate it! See below for my (final?) dropcap. I added some scattered leaves and textured background. Let me know what you think!

Hey everyone!

I am so behind on this project but I just sat my butt down this morning and started sketching for hours. I picked the book, The Fault in Our Stars because it's one of my favorite books this year. To give you a summary of the book:

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel's story is about to be completely rewritten.

So I picked the letter A, based on the male character's name in the book.

Here are my brainstorm words:

I ended up picking 3 themes within the book:

1. Amsterdam's Spring snow. When Augustus and Hazel were in Amsterdam, they got to experience spring snow. It was a beautiful moment in the book, and I think this concept is great for the letter.

"These pale petals were gathering in the wind like flocking birds- thousands of them, like a spring snowstorm."

2. Infinity. At the end of the book, Hazel said

"Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful."

I also combined this concept with their love of bubbly champagne that they had on their first date in Amsterdam

“I like this world. I like drinking champagne. I like not smoking. I like Dutch people speaking Dutch.”

3. Constellation.

“My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations.”

1. Based on the second 'A' on first row, I created the drop cap 'A' with my first concept, Spring snow. I want to capture the movement of the elm seeds blown by the wind. Here is my sketch:

2. Infinity + love of champagne sketch. I feel that this sketch is still kind of rough. Do you think the bubbles look like champagne?

3. Constellation sketch. This one is a bit different than the rest. I basically just drew a basic A shape with pencil and started free drawing the dots and lines on it. Is the 'A' still readable?

Any feedback and advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

---UPDATE--- Dec 5th, 2013

Hey guys,

Based on some feedback, a lot of people are liking the #1 and #3, so I decided to move on to sketch #1. Here is the vector version. If you have any comments or feedback, please let me know. I would love to improve on it :) Thank you!
