The Day of The Triffids by John Wyndham

For this project I chose 'The Day of The Triffids' by John Wyndham. I'm terrible at summarising books so this is from the blurb...

"When Bill Masen awakes blindfolded in hospital and carefully removes his bandages, he realises he is one of the few who can see; almost everyone else has been blinded by a meteor shower. Now, with civilization in chaos, the triffids - huge, venemous, plants able to 'walk', feeding on human flesh - can have their day. This stark vision of a desolate world infested by deadly, monstrous plants has lost none of its power to horrify".

Ideation.

Here are scans of my initial brainstorming. I want to focus on the themes of blindness/darkness and fear. In many scenes of the triffids they are hiding amongst other plants so they can 'sneak up' on their victims. I like the idea of combining the hidden predator with the fear/vulnerability of the blind population. Other themes I might explore are human nature/greed and survival and the line between moral and immoral in an apocolyptic world.

The book was published in 1951 so I'm looking at typography and illustrations from that era...

----

My first idea was to use the concept of hiding triffids....

I like the idea but the letterform and the illustrations are too disconnected and don't make one image.

---

Back to sketching....

I started to look at how I can make the W into a triffid and also incorporating an eye in the letterform to articulate the blindness theme of the novel.

I like how this is only hinting to the triffids, illustrating features of the plant described in the book. But it could also just be viewed as another generic leafy cursive character...

More sketches using the blindness/eye theme...

Also thinking about the comet that occurs at the beginning of the book and changes the whole world...

Designing the drop cap...

Here's my first concept digitized...

It might just look like a bit of leafy greenery, but in the book it describes the triffids (will post later), so I've taken elements of what is described and illustrated those aspects.

Update

Adding more detail to the letterform...

Dropcap #2

The theme of blindness is recurring the book as the story starts with most of the world's population being blinded by a meteor shower. The narrator also wakes up blindfolded as he was in a car accident days before the incident. The blind people have a dependence on the sighted, and a lot of the story focuses around what people will do to survive with their blindness and what the sighted will do for (or not do for) the blind so that they themselves can survive.
