The Cinnamon Peeler - Michael Ondaatje

My cover is based on this poem:

I started out by pulling out key words...

then I started loose sketching... I found that the first inclination is to be very literal with the imagery, wanting to show an actual cinnamon peeler's wife, but kept subtracting from it to try and make it more of an abstract reference open to more interpretation instead of showing too much...

after making initial sketches of ideas I hopped on Pinterest for some visual research... including the words "henna" ,"cinnamon", "wife" ,"India", as well as layout ideas from a board I created and maintain called "poster art"

after some more sketching I started on actual designs...

and I settled on the angled hand, as it suggested motion, the hands are used to peel, the angle brings the eye to the title, and overall it feels the most lyrical and iconic while not giving away too much literal information...
