The Catcher in the Rye

Just watched Salinger's documentary and was reminded how much I love this book. (Of course there's the added benefit that S is also the first letter of my last name.)

I did some sketching today and this is the one I liked the most. Throughout the novel, you find its protagonist, Holden Caulfield, smoking whenever he's depressed or irritated from the general phoniness surrounding him. (Which is quite a bit.)

I thought this imagery of a lit cigarette with smoke billowing from it and nothing else in the background capture the dynamic nature of Holden's narrative, and the isolation and alienation central to the book.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this sketch. I always worry my designs are too simple.
