The Business of the (Acting) Business

Just starting out in the acting business?  Looking to learn the basics, the ins and outs, and the things you didn’t know you didn’t know you didn’t know?  This is the class for you! 

In this class we wiill begin to demystify the business side of the entertainment industry.

There is more to being successful as an actor than being talented and attractive.  And there is a reason why they call it a business.  Learn the skills you need to get you and your materials noticed and take control over the aspects of the industry you actually can control.  Learn the secrets of show biz from an extremely successful singer/actor who has over 20 years of experience in the industry. 

In this workshop we will go talk about headshots and resumes.  There will be sample resumes and we will go over, step by step, how to make your resume look impressive, easy to read, and organized.  You will also have individual mini resume and headshot coaching sessions and will go home with some sample resumes in order to make the changes quickly and effectively. 

Alison Mahoney has been working in the theatre industry since age 5 and has experience in all sides of the industry as a performer, artistic staff, administrator, fundraiser, technician, and casting director.  Her performances have spanned the worlds of musical theatre, opera, and new music.  She has performed at the Public Theater, Lincoln Center, Paper Mill Playhouse, Baltimore Center Stage, and Vermont Stage Company. She has premiered roles in the Off Broadway productions of CHURCH, Dream of Love, Hot and Sweet, The Extraordinary Ordinary, and Einstein’s Dreams as well as the opera The Last of Manhattan. As a soloist, Alison has graced the stages of Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Jordan Hall, The Boston Esplanade, and toured Italy which culminated in singing for the Pope in St Peter’s Basilica. She received a BM in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and has been lucky to share the stage with Lea Michele, Katie Finneran, Polly Bergen, Robert Cuccioli, and Nick Jonas.  Alison can be seen this November as the “Singing Baker” on the Food Network show Sweet Genius.
