The Astronaut

Once upon a time…

There was a boy named Danny who wanted nothing more than to be an astronaut, like his hero, the Great John Flywell.

And every day…

Danny would play with his astronaut toys, pretending he was in space. He had made his own space helmet and shuttle out of old cardboard boxes. He would talk to his parents and his teacher about being an astronaut.

Until one day…

Some neighborhood bullies came by and made fun of Danny, pushed him around, and broke his astronaut toys. They told him playing make-believe is for babies, especially something as dumb as being an astronaut.

And because of this…

Danny felt embarrassed and ashamed of pretending to be an astronaut. He felt he needed to like the things the cool kids liked, such as sports.

And because of this…

Danny put his astronaut toys away, and didn’t talk about it anymore. He would try to kick a soccer ball around during recess, but it didn’t feel fun to him.

Until finally…

His hero, the Great John Flywell, came to Danny’s school and told everyone how cool being an astronaut was. Everyone was amazed. And then, Flywell asked the teacher if there were any big astronaut fans in the class, and she called Danny up to come shake hands with his hero, and get their picture taken together.

Ever since that day…

Everyone thought Danny was so cool for shaking hands with an astronaut and wanting to be one, and he wasn’t afraid to play with astronaut toys, talk about being an astronaut, or play make believe about it anymore.
