The Ames 5 ½ - We Travel In Peace!

This class could not have come at a better time. My family and I are planning on flying to Myrtle Beach later this year and this is one of those things that I would have thought about in hindsight. This is what's so great about A. J. D., when he's around, he does the thinking for you. Anyway, there are 5 of us now and my wife is pregnant with our 4th, so… that makes the ½. All zeka aside, it should be a fun trip and this little sticker is going to make it a little easier.

Here are my sketches. It was nice seeing, you, Doctor Draplin sketching the way I like to sketch - quick and dirty. I see some people's sketches and wonder why they spent so much time on them. I guess we just use the process diferently.

As I started sketching, I began to notice how much the plane in the circle resembled a peace sign. I wanted to capitalize on that; it really speaks for who our family is. I put a couple of exclamation points at the end of “WE TRAVEL IN PEACE!!” to give it a sense of 'not done' or 'uneasiness'. Although we are peaceful people, the uneasiness comes into play when you try and travel with 3 kids, 6 and under, who have never been on a plane before.

I was able to cheat the angle of the peace sign and the angle of the plane wings, to get the look to come across.

I actually have 2 line weights. One for the peace sign and the outer circular edge; and then the weight of the lines on the inside of the circle and the words. I would have liked to only have one line weight, but the peace sign in the middle felt a little orphaned, so I added the outer one. I think it does a pretty good job of tying the whole thing together. Plus there is enough contrast between the 2 weights, to make it work.

We are going to South Carolina, and they are known for their palm trees, so I thought it would be fun to add them. This element will change is we go to other places. I think it will be fun to try to come up with different dividers for all of the places we go. This one feels right for beach travel, but if we were to go to the desert, maybe a cactus would take it's spot.

Here's what it looks like, as a patch, on my favorite pair of white pants:

Other elements that change will be the airport abbreviations. Right now this says MCI and MYR; if we were flying to Phoenix, we would use MCI and PHX. Get it? You were so close to getting the Kansas City code right in your videos. BTW, I see you are coming here soon for MOTMF, I'll see you there and you are more than welcome to come by our place for a home cooked meal. (seriously)

As far as the colors go, I wanted it to feel bright, colorful and beachy. This makes it easy to be seen as well. The rest is phone number's, one is my wife's and one is mine.

Thanks,

Quentin
