A locavore map of some of my favorite slow food & artisan spots in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? A gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc. I love illustrated maps and as a designer, would love to expand my skill sets in this area. Time permitting I want to try 2/3 different type and illustration styles to see how it influences the message, tone and personality of the map.
Why am I the expert to create this map? The Lower East Side is home and I really love the neighborhood vibe and the various local businesses that make it such a vibrant community.
Who is my target audience? Anyone interested in local business, slow food and artisan crafters found in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is going to be used/held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web) I'd like it to work both printed and digitally. Would be nice if the printed map could accompany an article about the Slow Food and local artisan movements in the Lower East Side.
What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding, etc.) Location names, little blurbs about what they do, and use of icons for each business type/category (restaurants, book stores, artisans, etc).
