That's Awesome

This is my final iteration. I still don't feel like I resolved the treatment for "that's" but I really labored over it and I think I'm ready to move on to my next lettering project. I've really enjoyed this experience and hope to continue drawing letter forms!

This is pretty close to my final version. After my first round in illustrator I thought that the thick swashes were too heavy besides the lowercase letters in "Awesome" so I made them thinner - more delicate. I changed the original treatment I had for "That's" to a sans serif all caps font because i wanted to set it apart from the main word. Not sure if its working though.

I am starting to work with the width tool in illustrator and really loving it. It takes some time to figure out but I'm beginning to get the hang of it. I have a lot of work to do still but its slowly coming along. Once I'm further along with my vector art I'd like to play with colors and textures. Would love any feedback at this point.

Above scan is round 2. Would love some feedback. I think the word  "Thats" needs work...it might be too small and there's an awkward space to the right of it. Is the over all phrase legible? I wonder if I need to add some space inbetween the letters in "awesome" I'm not reading the "A" in awesome. Below is my first pass at the phrase.

Below is another approach but am thinking of doing something blocky and 3d. hoping to spend some time on it over the weekend.

Original concept:

I thought it would be fun to letter a phrase that has the word "awesome" in it since it seems to be an overly used word that I hear almost every day. I, for one, don't use the word very often. I prefer to reserve it to describe either a place or situation that is "awe" inspiring, like the Swiss Alps or the gigantic reclining Buddha in Bankok, Thailand. My intentions are to letter "awesome"using this imagery in mind as I sketch.

I've been a graphic designer for quite some time and really love my profession. I like that its constantly changing which forces me to always have to reinvent myself. I guess this is part of the reason why I decided to sign up for this class. I love to sketch, however; don't have much experience with hand lettering so this seems like a worthwhile and challenging project. I'm looking forward to the process and seeing what others in the class come up with.
