THROUGH THE DOOR

STEP 1: SELECTING THE TEXT

I chose to focus on the short poem "William and Emily" from Edgar Lee Master's "Spoon River Anthology. This particular story grabbed my attetion for reasons I wasn't to sure of at first at first, but unfolded as I dug deeper. Out of every story in the anthology, there's was the only one of happiness; the only one of love. A couple inseperable and passionate about each other despite the grim nature surrounding them. I found it interesting since every tale is told from beyond the grave and that is where my narrative came from. I also picked from other stories such as "Rev. Lemuel Wiley," "Elizabeth Childers," and "Mrs. Charles Bliss" to tease out the narrrative I envisioned.

The central point comes from this poem:

There is something about

Death like love itself!

If someone with whom you have known passion

And the glow of youthful love,

You also, after years of life

Together, feel the sinking of fire

And thus fade away together,

Gradually, faintly, delicately,

As it were in each other's arms,

Passing from the familiar room--

That is the power of unison between souls

Like love itself!
