THE CHEMIST (FINAL DRAFT)

I chose Trainor, the Druggist from Spoonriver Anthology to adapt as it really spoke to me as a story. I think it's a great portrait of loneliness and an ode to the decontruction of mundane married life. I plan on making it a modern adaptation, the chemist being the central focus of the piece observing the bizzare lives of those around him and it being just a snippet of obscure life.

Trainor, the Druggist

ONLY the chemist can tell, and not always the chemist, What will result from compounding
Fluids or solids.
And who can tell

How men and women will interact
On each other, or what children will result? There were Benjamin Pantier and his wife, Good in themselves, but evil toward each other; He oxygen, she hydrogen,
Their son, a devastating fire.
I Trainor, the druggist, a miser of chemicals, Killed while making an experiment,
Lived unwedded.

Logline: 'A chemist with a drug addiction spends the final moments of his life facing his inner demons when a dysfunctional family wants him to break the rules.'
