Sweet as a Peach

INTRODUCTION & INSPIRATION 10/24/13

Hi there!

My name is Marta, and I'm a graphic designer living and working in beautiful San Francisco, CA. While I have some experience with hand-lettering, I'm continuing to learn, develop, and refine my craft. I'm excited to participate in this class in hopes of learning some different hand-lettering approaches and techniques.

Since I'm originally from the South, I'm looking to bring a bit of that heritage into the first phrase that I illustrate: "You're as sweet as a peach."

I found some amazing and beautiful inspiration, and I'm excited to play with ways of translating these different styles and references into my concept.

UPDATE 10/28/13: LETTERING WARM-UP

I was happy to finally put pencil to paper today! Below are my initial typographic sketches and explorations using the word "peach" from my phrase, "You're as sweet as a peach."

I'm enjoying the way that both the script and the ornate are starting to work. I'm considering finding a happy place somewhere between these two designs: simple and elegant with hints of nostalgia. But we'll see what happens in the next phase of sketching!

UPDATE 11/03/13: THUMBNAILS

Below are thumbnail layout ideas that maintain and evolve some of the ideas from the lettering warm-up. Some are more simple, some feel a bit more homey, and some more nostalgic or vintage.

While I think #6 is interesting with it's organic and representational nature, it's not exactly what I had in my head for the mood and tone of the illustration. I also think #1 could be nice if I executed the final illustration in a beautiful watercolor, which would bring the simplicity of it to life.

After referring back to my tone and inspiration, I believe that I would like to narrow in on the more nostalgic style with ornamental details, so I selected the sketches below as tentative layouts to move forward with. But what do YOU think? I would absolutely love your thoughts!

UPDATE 12/08/13: DETAILED SKETCHES

Well, it's only been a MONTH since I've provided any updates! And I must say, I'm pretty disappointed that I missed the "challenge" cut off time, but I'm not letting that stop my slow-and-steady progress! The month has been crazy with work and holidays, but I was able to get some much needed lettering time in this past week and weekend. I'd love your thoughts!

Based on some of the wonderful feedback, I've refined some of the thumbnails into more detailed sketches. I decided to move forward wtih thumbnails #5 and #8. I also sketched out thumbnail #1, because I wasn't quite ready to let it go! After drawing out 5 and 8, I thought there was potentially something interesting with combining the two, so I also created a hybrid/frankensteined option of 5 & 8.

From here, I'd love to get thoughts and feedback so I can move forward with final lettering details, refinements, and a perfected sketch before moving to inking.

Thanks for looking!
