Surface Pattern Design & Stationery Business

Hello all,

My name is Jordyn, and I’m glad that I found this workshop! I’m interested in pursuing a career in surface pattern design and for me the hardest part is knowing exactly where to start. I’ve been working on my designs for a while but I haven’t gone beyond that. My main goal right now is to get my work out there on channels like society6 or similar sites. Eventually I’d like to license my designs (something I’d also like to learn more about).

I’ve always been interested in stationery and I think it would be interesting to sell little journals and cards with my designs on them in addition to licensing.

This workshop seems like the perfect start for me, as I will have a better understanding of my brand for when I start selling my work. (I have no idea what to even call my business). I look forward to taking the next steps towards a career in surface pattern design, getting feedback, and seeing everyone’s work.

I like the idea of doing a circular logo that has some elements of icons. I've sketch out some motifs nothing is standing out as far as logos yet. I'll be playing around with my motif sketches until something happens!

I was trying to go for something like my moodboard sample but the motifs didn't quite fit together as I wanted them to. So I kept playing around with some of the motifs that I drew and came up with this. I'd like to continue working on the circular logo more (different motifs and shapes inside of the circle), but it's better than nothing. I am leaning towards the circular logo. I think the circle alone would look nice on business cards etc. What do you think? Coming up with a logo/symbol was definitely that hardest part for me!
