Hoping this version is more readable!

Here is my version with color & texture. I tried to vary the lettering placement a bit the way Nate Williams does. It feels more child-friendly to me this way. Would welcome some constructive crits!

First stage of inking. I still want a rough feel, but I am going to tweek a couple of these letters where I don't like the lock up (like M & P & O SS).

Totally went back to the drawing board. Decided to simplify and make the lettering about the actual content of the verse I selected. In this case, it's about the annunciation (to Mary about becoming pregnant.) These are super rough, but it's the direction I'm now headed. Obviously, I'm the slowest person in this class, but I will get there :) Question for class - is the "I" in impossible reading okay?

Also, I'm not sure if it's clear from my original inspiration board, but I really like the way Nate Williams alters his lettering style within the same piece (he mixes case, font, style, etc.) Hoping to achieve some of this, but more in my style.

Experimenting with some borders. Think they are getting too busy, but I want some sort of drawn edge.

Second version (not inked). More of an experiment with dog toys:

Second round of thumbs:

Version 1

Version 2 (I started playing with the idea of God's hand holding a bone on the right. So I worked it into the 3rd thumbnail.)

Version 3: Thinking this one is a little hard to read. Thoughts?

Is one version working better? Thanks, in advance for your feedback!

Take 2: Thank you so much for the feedback! I am going with the dog & bones approach. Hope to make more progress soon. I don't want these illustrations to be so literal, because I want them to have a wider application.

Also, I want to remember that my style is not as formal as many of the projects in this class here. I see such beautiful lettering from the rest of the class and, I'll be honest, it intimidates me a little. My style is more like this:

Thanks for all of the inspiration!

So I know I'm way far behind everyone (did I mention I have a 2-year-old?). My idea is actually going to start a series that will be called "Sunday School". It's based on Bible quotes my son is learning in Sunday School. I am so tired of looking at poorly typed/kerned verses that are so dull visualized, but I'm impressed with how they teach the concepts (he's actually memorized a few verses already. Did I mention he's 2?) Anyway, I want to make these more fun and definitely kid-friendly (so no scripts can be used, since they haven't been teaching that in school and also because this will be aimed at kids learning to read). I want these to be something a kid would actually want to look at. I don't think I'm quite there yet with my lettering ideas, but I'm putting it out there to shove myself forward.

Here's my mood board. Basically, illustrators & letterors who inspire me & a scripture quote that was the basis behind this idea.

Here's the verse I chose to start with.

The 1 word experiements. Actually misspelled "impossible". Good start!

Some thumbs. I sort of like the ideas in the top and bottom, far right. The first being an ark, the latter being a dog chasing his tail. Hope to make more progress soon!
