Summer Swatch

You have no idea how excited I am to be taking this class. Things have been hectic lately, but as with all things in life, if it's important, I'll find the time. I'm off to a slow start, but better late than never. :)

As MaJo suggested, I started off by brainstorming:

While brainstorming, I referred to memories of picnics long past.

I also thought about days spent at the park with my daughter. She's 3, and to this day, loves to pluck dandelions at our local park and blow the little fuzzies off the stem.

To me, picnics are about enjoying the little things in life and living simply, even if only for a little while. I hope to convey a feeling of whimsy to my repeat.

Next, came the mood board:

I sort of have this idea to give each motif a personality...a little face with 2 eyes and a mouth. Not sure if that will work out, but that's the plan.

Keeping the mood board elements in mind, I made some sketches with a pen and some printer paper...

I tried using the Image Trace feature in Illustrator CS6 and it was a disaster, so I'll be retracing with the blob brush.

My vector sketches:

I've narrowed down my motifs to the following:

Let's see if they'll make a nice repeat...

Using the pattern tool, I made a tossed pattern:

When I can find more time, I'll experiment and make other pattern types. This is fun!
