Subterranean Homesick Blues

Subterranean Homesick Blues - student project

Hi, my name is Kelly.

I'm an alumni of the University of Tennessee—Martin, and around this time every year the department of visual and theater arts at UTM holds an art exhibit for participating alumni, called "Guitar as Art". This year for the show, I wanted to try my hand at a hand lettering piece based around the song lyrics to Bob Dylan's, 'Subterranean Homesick Blues'.

Starting out I spray painted the back of the guitar with a matte chalkboard paint. Then I began thinking about the layout. Then I sketched all the letters and phrases to the song, a LOT. :) I wanted the shape of the letters to have an older feel to them and did a lot of research on type design, old store windows, and more modern design.

After that I bought a white paint pen and gold pen from the local art store and began filling in the letters.

Added the gold accents...

And BOOM goes the dynamite! I'm happy w/how it turned out. And Its one of kind.
