Style my Nooks!

April 2, 2013

It was challenging to choose just one photo from the millions of gorgeous ones out there.  I chose this photo from one of my favorite house tours from www.apartmenttherapy.com.  It's the bedroom of designer/blogger behind www.themarionhousebook.com.  I love the soft, organic feel of the space and think it captures the 8 principles of interior styling:

1) NEEDS:  a place for sleeping and resting....a place for dressing, bench to sit to donn shoes etc..... baskets and bedside table for storage....a place for holding books/lamp for bedtime reading.

2) SHAPE & SIZE:  the geometric shapes of the bed, bench, pillows and books are softened by organic shapes of the baskets, bedside table, fig tree, curtains and accessories.

3) COLOR:  red, green and blues layered on a background of creams and natural tones.

4) PATTERN:  a nice mix of solids fabrics with patterned textiles on the bed.

5) TEXTURE: texture is founds everywhere, from the woven baskets, the fringe on the bedcover, cowhide on the floor, leather purse, the soft window coverings, the leaves of the fig tree, and the various wood elements in the room.

6) PLACEMENT & SPACING:  repetition of circle shape at different levels (in the baskets, side table, accessories)...the collection of odd number of pillows on the bed....the placement of the fig tree and bed under the bay window to act as a focal point.

7) BLING:  very subtle bling in this room....the metal zipper on the purse, the metal lamp, the low accessory on the bedside table.

8) BOTANICALS:  the gorgeous fig tree in the window!

Here are some before photos of the little studio loft I call home.  I'm looking forward to transforming some of the nooks in my space with the help of Justina's tips and inspiration.

BEFORE: Couch and Coffee Table

I don't have space for a traditional credenza so I will style my bench instead (in bedroom zone).

BEFORE: Bench

I don't have a traditional bookcase either.  I store some of my books in a cubby hidden behind this chalkboard...so I will use this area for the styling homework.
