Star Gazers

PART 1

STAR GAZERS: STAR WARS EDITION

This was so much fun and surpsingly simple. At first I wanted to put the subjects on Mars, like a boy and his bot hanging out on the red planet and staring up at the sky (Earth in the distance). But the more I thought about the bot, the more I kept picturing BB8 from the new Star Wars movie. So, long story short, Mars became Tatooine, and the boy and his bot became R2D2 and BB8.

Making the art Star Wars themed meant that I could create my own constellations based on the characters in the Star Wars universe. I knew I wanted a mix of creatures and male and female. I wanted heroes and gods and warriors and mothers.

Here's what I came up with:

Mamma the Hutt (of the Hutts; actual character in the Star Wars universe)

Skywalker (Luke)

The Goddess (of the Twi'leks; another character from the universe who is nameless)

The Warrior (Lanoree Brock: she was a famous Jedi warrior)

The Great Woo (of the Wookies; I totally made this one up, but I couldn't resist; I imagine this figure as an Arthurian Legend type of guy)

The Sage (Yoda)

ND-1 ("Andy," the first android)

Here's my process in gif form.

PART II:

STAR GAZERS: THE PRINCESS BRIDE EDITION

This piece features two familiar characters looking at each other and wondering about the future as they wish upon the stars.

The constellations are mostly based on the characters from the book.

Here they are:

The Giant (Fezzik, or Andre the Giant from the film)

The Dread Pirate Roberts (A figure of lore and Westley’s assumed name, as well as the assumed name of all his Pirate-y successors)

The Six-Fingered Man (Count Rugen: the man who drives our favorite avenger, Inigo Montoya)

The Sicillian (So clever he outwitted himself and died as a result)

The Miracle Workers (Max & Valerie; Imagine their constellations waving as they yell “Have fun stormin’ the castle!”)

The Shrieking Eel (A terrifying sea creature and one which prompts little boys to interrupt the story to make sure the princess is going to make it)

The Impressive Clergyman (A pro at performing any “Mah-widge”)

The Swordmaker (Inigo’s Father; famous for his beautiful swords and terrifying death)

I think I'm either going to do a Game of Thrones or a LoTR one next.

Cheers!
