What a fantastic class! I've absolutely loved making my map, so massive thank you to Tom for sharing your process - I can't wait to experiment with some of the techniques that you showed us here.
For this project I decided to illustrate the area around where I live. Once I'd done the initial map sketch I realised there were far too many things that I wanted to include, so I zoomed in on a much smaller area.
I had to draw the roads freehand, so they're not really true to life, but I don't think that matters too much. Then my favourite part of the project was adding all the lettering and little details. It was so cool to see everything coming together in Photoshop.
Then I spent aaages moving all the different bits around the map until they were pretty much back where they had started, and voila...
I don't think there are any 'official' St Leonards' colours, but there are a row of posts along the seafront that light up bright turquoise, purple and pink, so I based my colour scheme around them.
Once I'd finished I decided to try a yellow and grey scheme too. I don't think this one is just right yet (I might swap the land and sea colours), so I'm going to keep experimenting with it.
