Springtime in Northern Wisconsin

When I think about spring I immediately think of the end of the brutal winter here in Northern Wisconsin. We are certainly ready for the snow to melt and life to return to our dreary winter landscape.

For my moodboard I went with the spring that I see right outside my window, the return of spring to the forest. This includes woodland flowers, the birth of baby forest animals, maple syrup season and foraging for spring foods including the wild onions and tender baby ferns, or as the Ojibwe call them, waagaagin, right before they unfurl.

After doing my moodboard and sketches I was really taken with the images of the waagaagins and really wanted to use these to make my pattern. I wanted to have a hand drawn and organic watercolor look so that is what I tried to achieve with my pattern. I really love the way it turned out although I do feel it could use a little more tweaking when I have more time.
