Spring Challenge - Prairie

SPRING CHALLENGE!! (newest updates are posted first)

I also started a shop at Society 6 (https://society6.com/aliguti) with this pattern, I'm new to it but I'm just amazed to see my design on products. Thanks Elizabeth for your great courses, for this spring challenge and for your mention! It's been trully inspiring.

4) MOCKUPS

And so here are my mockups! Although my first idea was to create stationery (and I did), once I went into trying mockups I just couldn't stop! I hope you like them.

This was actually my original idea. I wanted to design stationery for the local botanical garden.

And of course, a totebag!

3) RAPPORTS & SCALE TESTS

My first idea was to mantain a white or light background, but when I tried dark colors I saw they worked quite well. As you can see, my rapport is a rectangle and not a square, but I think this fits well with the Prairie idea.

White works good as well, and it would be easier and cheaper to print anyway.

I tried with other dark colors like deep blue and dark red.

Scale mainly depends on the object itself, so I did some blind tests as first, but I had to do some mockups at the end to actually see how it really worked. Because it was first made by hand, I think extreme scales don't work. It better fits medium scales.

2) SKETCHES

I went all in with watercolors and acrylics. I've learned a couple of things with these system. First of all, a good scanner is everything, as you can see, there are some verions of each sketch, some I did them with my camera and others with the scanner. The scanner is good for keeping light levels but I think that cameras are better with color. At least my scanner is not good enough.

Anyway,as you can see, I totally lost perception of my color palette. I tried to use it, but is not easy to emulate really bright colors, screen is one thing, but hand-drawings are another thing. So, I really concentrated on playing with color. Trying out color combinations. As I said, I think Spring is all about color. I tend to try and make some other ideas in Illustrator, where I will be able to use brighter colors, but since is not a commission, is nice to just let it go and do whatever it comes out from my imagination. At the end I went with some abstract figures.

So, enough of talking! These are the results! I will take them to illustrator and create the patterns in the next couple of days.

1) MOODBOARDS & INSPIRATION

Its been a while now since I wanted to do a couple of designs for some stationery. I went with the traditional concept of Spring, blooming flowers, vibrant colors and new textures. However, I didn't want to use directly some images for inspiration.

That's why I did a COLOR moodboard, because that's at the end what Spring is all about, and another moodboard about SHAPE & TEXTURE. Just pure inspiration of both things to try and see them independtly. We'll see how this ends!
