Spinning the Yarn

Spinning your own yarn is fun and relaxing, plus you will have the option to make it into something wearable.

As this is for beginners, I have also included the instructions on how to make your own spindle. For those of you who already have a spindle, you may skip that particular video.

The materials list includes all you will need for the entire project.

  1. 12" dowel that is 3/8" in diameter
  2. a 2" wooden wheel, available at hobby shops
  3. 1 - 12" length of cotton yarn (dishcloth yarn works great)
  4. Pencil sharpener - the one with two sizes is ideal, as the bigger one is the one needed
  5. Sandpaper
  6. Roving or rolags - sheep, mohair or alpaca (my personal preference is the latter)

By the end of the class you will have learned how to:

  1. make the spindle
  2. draft the roving
  3. spin the yarn
  4. make a center-pull ball
  5. ply your yarn
  6. set the twist
