So long and thanks for all the fish.

Here is the inked version. This is a composite of layers for the fish scales and details in the waves; also a few lettering fixes. It is looking pretty good although there are a couple places where the ink looks a little smudged and the curves could be touched up especially on the "S" and "L"at the top. I had a wiggley hand in some spots.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Now on to Handlettering II to learn digitizing and color.

Thanks everyone for the feedback!

After some delay...I am going with #1. I just really love the lettering in this one and it seemed to be a favorite with the community.

I did try to make it a bit more balanced at the top per Mary Kate's advice, but I'm not sure if it is quite there yet. Anyway, I think I'm getting close to inking.

Finally getting around to my second round of first sketches. Now is the hard part of deciding which one to go with.

1.

2.

3. Made the word "Fish" a little heavier.

More sketches. The first one is the revision with a longer surf board, which did help to make the word "Fish" larger. I felt like it was missing something, so I added some illustrative elements, but I'm not sure if it is working or if it is just making it more busy??

Here is the first attempt at a full-size sketch, actual size is 4.5" x 8" My proportions are a little off from the thumbnails. The bounding shape ends up looking more like a boogie board :) It also makes "So Long" and "Thanks" a bit larger and "Fish" a bit smaller. I'm not sure if the emphasis is quite right. I may try elongating the shape so that I can get the word "Fish" to be a bit larger.

One more to add to the pile. I combined elements that I liked from the others. Plus I kept the surfboard shape, which I like, but didn't make sense on its own. Not sure if it is getting too busy though.

Also did a little more lettering exploration, mostly trying to get the S and L the way I want it. With that swoopy characterisitc looks like a brush script.

A few thumbnails I've been working on, not sure which one I like yet. I like the surfboard shaped thumbnail, but I don't know if it is a good visual of for the quote. Any feedback is welcome.

Warm up, the word "fish" seems to be the most visual word of the quote.

...from one of my favorite book series that is full of odball quotes–Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

My (sort of) mind map brought me to the like the idea of surf and beach related signs, posters, and logos with script lettering. I like the big swooping capitals, beachy turquose and orange colors that acompany these pieces. Also like the vintage marquee or neon sign motif.
