Preliminary sketch: it evolved a fair bit from this in the end.


(My taste is normally for more flourishy lettering but I decided to keep it fairly simple for my first try.)

The font I used was Blanch from Lost Type:


Here's what I did in Illustrator. As you can see, I didn't modify the letters a huge amount, but I stretched them to connect with the "outline" surrounding the words, and to give the image a playful feel as if the letters were dancing. I gave the outline a pointed end to suggest a pencil point.


Next step was to glam it up a bit in Photoshop. I used an image of crumpled paper as a texture and played around with layers and overlays. I kept with the pencil theme by using colours reminiscent of a yellow and blue pencil. Here are two finished versions:
