Self-Portrait - student project

I had a lot of fun creating this project! I've been wanting to transition from branding design & fine art painting into more flat,  editorial illustrations and this was great practice.

For my sketch phase I wrote down a few things that apply to me at the moment or visual things I wanted to represent.

I travel full-time and my middle name is Atlas so the globe was important. I also travel with a french press because I am that much of a coffee lover. And I'm almost always painting, reading or listening to music. I also only wear black clothing.

The first sketch felt a bit boring and I thought the second was a more engaging silhouette so I went with that one.

First rendition I made in Adobe Draw on my iPad. Since this program is easiest to block in large shapes.

I felt like it needed texture so I re-created it in Procreate.

I felt like in the right context the composition could be cool but I preferred the background to be the charcoal grey as well.
