Seeds and Flowers

Seeds and Flowers - student project

Being in the middle of Canadian winter, on walks in the woods, I started noticing the stems and seeds of plants in the snow. This helped me I realize that there are botanical drawings for different seasons. Winter highlights the dried plants of the fall.

I started sketching grasses, seed/pod plants and small flowers. Then I tried to put them into thumbnail sketches. The challenge was to have enough interest on different levels i.e. small, medium and tall, and large enough flowers for focal points.

I tried using carne relief on a plant pot. The tip was very slippery and the paint didn't flow easily, so I left it very simple. I was looking for a more fine tip style but its a bit more rustic.

I do like the combination of the large bud flower with the dill, the smaller seed pod plant and the small leafy plant in the sketch below. I'd like to see what can develop out of this.
