Sara's Influence Map

Here are the biggest media influences from my childhood.  I see some common themes here; animals, nature and the woods, youth (young animals/children), playfulness, simplicity.

The illustrations in The Paintbrush Bunny and Gyo Fujikawa's Fairy Tales and Fables fascinated me; I would stare at them and study them any time I opened those books.

I was a huge fan of the tv show, "Little House on the Prairie", but I chose an illustration from Little House in the Big Woods to represent Laura Ingalls Wilder because I not only loved this book, I love the art of Garth Williams as well.

My three year old daughter is currently obsessed with Golden Books - we've been collecting the older ones, anything from the sixties or earlier, especially those illustrated by Eloise Wilkin, Richard Scarry and Garth Williams.  I've enjoyed revisiting Disney's classics with her as well; Bambi and Snow White were two of my favorites.

If I could have added anything else, I would've included Peter Rabbit, Roald Dahl/Quentin Blake, and some images to represent my favorite childhood activities: photography, cross stitch and ballet.

This was a fun exercise and a great way to get insight into where I've come from and how my style has developed!
