SPONTA - Increasing profits for culture tour operators

After years of speculation and false starts, I started following Ash Maurya's Running Lean, an adaption of Lean Startup by Eric Ries.  Running Lean puts the theory into practice and emphasises validating the need for your product and market size.

Last summer I had narrowed my ideas down and made contact with my target group with interviews.  The goal wasn't to sell anything, simply test wether they had a problem worth solving.  I spoke with people in Iceland, Belgium, Ireland and Ethiopia.  They were all grateful to have someone show interest in their position as a small business owner and after half an hour, most of them wanted to know about me and what I was developing.  Some even asked if I could help them somehow, even though I didn't have a product ready.  Quite encouraging, I thought, so I decided to put more efforts into this idea.

Timeline:

  • 1994-2014: Gathering experience as a project manager, teacher and coach.
  • 2012: Problem interviews with small business owners and enterpreneurs, mostly in education and tourism
  • 2013: Narrowed down the problem hypothesis.  Conducted problem interviews with family-run tour operators.  Bingo!  Problem found.
  • 2014:  Started giving courses for entrepreneurs and small business owners in tourism/travel industry.
