Russia: Moscow - World Travel Series

I have tried using the pen tool in Illustrator before only to fail miserably and close the program. I know how to use Photoshop for webdesign and photo editing, but I want to broaden my horizon and learn Illustrator for several upcoming projects. So, when I came across this course I decided to take the plunge and so far I'm really enjoying it.

For my project I've decided to recreate the poster Russia: Moscow by Anderson Design Group Inc. I have asked them for permission to use the poster. They were really kind and granted me it without a problem.

The colours and shapes are absolutely lovely in this poster and I can't wait to use all the techniques I have learnt so far to recreate it. I can already see some parts which are going to be hard to make, but I'm up for the challenge.

//// UPDATE 1 /////

This is what I  have so far. I've used several tools here to achieve the result that you see. The pathfinder tool was pretty nice to cut out some shapes out of other shapes, this helped me a lot with some of the brown arcs that you see. Some of the shapes that I've used are rectangles and rounded rectangles. For some of the bigger brown and red parts I've created a rectangle and later added path points to it with the pen tool and moved them with the Direct Selection Tool (A) to make the shapes. For some of the green parts I've used the pen tool only. I feel really comfortable with the pen tool now, especially after practising some circles and half-circles in another file.

I'll update as soon as possible. Looking forward on finishing this piece!

Thank you.
