Runway Beauty Trends: Spring 2014

My pick for Trend Sources:

A couple of these are subscription or members sites, but often have free tidbits or news items posted.

  • and WWD Beauty
  • WGSN

  • New York Magazine
  • French Vogue

  • (product & retail trends, they're on them pretty fast)
  • POPSugar Beauty
  • (Cosmetic Executive Women, industry trade group)
  • (pinterest-style site for makeup looks)
  • Fashion Gone Rogue (covers editorial and ads)

Overall trend sites

  • (A trend forecasting service for fashion, beauty, home, general. Is way out ahead of most others)
  • (avant garde blog for design, fashion, art, music)
  • (technology, retail, design, advertising)

  • (color trends)
  • (includes street-style color palettes)

Runway Fads:

Here's my pinboard with the hair and makeup outliers from the collection.

  • MOP-TOP WIGS. While hairstylists sent them down the runways at Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Fendi and L'Wren Scott, these chopped up wigs are unlikely to make it to the streets anytime soon.
  • BOLD BROWS. Makeup artists from Céline to Gareth Pugh used heavy statement-making eyebrows for the runway, but brow plates and black slashes won't transition well to street style.
  • PAINTED LADIES. Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen are a few of the designers that took to the airbrush and paint brush for "runway only" theatrics at this Spring's shows.

Runway Trends:

From top to bottom of the pinboard:

  • PRETTY PASTELS. A soft wash of eyeshadow color hit the runways for a perfect springtime look. From pearlescent white at Altuzarra to soft purple at Phillip Lim. Dior and YSL have already previewed pastel makeup collections for Spring 2014.
  • FLOWER GIRL. Floral hair accessories showed up on the runway, from fairy-like sprinkles to headbands and barrettes. Anna Sui, Dolce & Gabbana and Zac Posen got in on the trend.

  • SOLID GOLD. Models received the gilded treatment as the popular metallic was liberally sprinkled across lids, nails, eyebrows and even side parts. Jason Wu, Dries van Noten and Raf Simons for Dior were right on target.
  • LOUD LIPS. In contrast to minimal makeup, designers at House of Holland, Marchesa, DKNY and Prabal Garung punctuated the pout with vivid hues from orange (a trend within a trend) to hot pink to lilac.

  • DARE TO GO BARE: Fresh-faced models were quite literally without makeup at several design houses. With little more than moisturizer or concealer to brave the world, great skincare will be key.

  • BABY BLUES: From azure to cobalt to pastel, blue was a go-to color on the runways from Marc Jacobs (both shows) and Anna Sui to Miu Miu.
  • CROWNING GLORY: Milkmaid braids continue to be a strong trend across runways, red carpet and street style. A perfect combination of young and modern, the trend is here to stay.

I've included a few celebrity and street style looks for some of the trends. In addition, there are also pins of products options and images from Spring 2014 beauty collections on the horizon.

I'm heading to Rio for work tonite, so wanted to get this done before I leave. I would love to hear your feedback or suggestions on ways to make this more targeted or complete.

P.S. Check out my other pinboards and comment if you like.

Happy Holidays!

Runway Trends, Final Edit:

Hi ladies, I'm heading into the deadline with my final post with 1/2 hour to spare! I've posted 7 trends for Spring 2014. Since the shows back in the Fall, a couple of them, namely cropped haircuts and bold brows, have transitioned from fads. I've included a sneak peek below, and you can view the rest at:

Let me know what you think.

Cheers, Nancy
