I'm super excited about this project! What a great idea to do a pennant. I'm also looking forward to adding to my personal library of textures.

MY CITY:

Richmond, Virginia

I grew up just outside of Richmond and am so proud of how far this city has come. It used to be scary but there are so many good things happening now: festivals, restaurants, beer...what's not to love?

MY REFERENCES:

Jon is right, Oxford Pennant has some great stuff on their site! Below are some of my favorites. I am leaning towards not doing something scripty, so I was drawn to ones with serif or sans serif type. I like the shape of the text in "Pittsburgh" (arched) and "Hustled Down in Texas" (fluid). I also like the idea of including an illustration of some sort on the left side or a border around the whole pennant. If I HAD to choose a favorite Oxford Pennant, I think it would be "Austin, Texas." Something about that whole piece is really appealing to me.

Below are two more internet finds that I like. The first one incorporates more pattern and decorative elements into the piece. The second one is another variation of the border idea.

MY DESIGN:

I'm running out of time to create a custom design for this class...work and life are getting in the way! Luckily I remembered a design I created a few months ago so I'm going to repurpose it for this project.

MY TEXTURES:

Below are photos I took of different textures.

I went through all of the tutorials to get the best results. (I LOVE the link Jon shared for how to balance out the lighting in some photos). My favorites are below but who knows, the other ones might end up looking better when I put them on my design! I also think I may need to redo some as there might be too much texture...the middle one seems okay though.

MY PENNANT DESIGN:

Since I'm using an existing design, I had to get creative with the layout of my pennant to make it fit. I decided to turn it so it's long instead of horizontal. This meant I needed to fill up the space with other decorative design elements. I used the wavy lines to represent the James River (one of our city nicknames is "The River City") and the star to represent the capital, since Richmond is the state capital of Virginia.

I'm having trouble choosing colors though. I wanted to do something with blue so the big space at the bottom looks like a river, but this current gray/navy color scheme with the star reminds me too much of the Dallas Cowboys! I'll keep playing with it when I go back and add texture.

MY FINAL PENNANT DESIGN WITH TEXTURES:

I went through a lot of versions of this in different colors and combinations of textures. Ultimately I decided to keep it simple with just one texture. This texture in particular is actually the one made from the watermark streaks, so it's kind of neat that it goes with the river part of the design.
