Revisiting Palm Springs

Revisiting Palm Springs - student project

The Project

When I was a kid my parents would take me to Palm Springs sporadically throughout my childhood. For some reason the area always stayed vivid in my mind, including all the land marks along the way. The field of wind mills, the succulents and the Cabazon Dinosaurs (The ones Pee Wee visited!). It's been years since I've been, but I wanted to create a map marking the spots and landmarks I visited when I was a kid along with some new and interesting spots I'd like to visit on my return trip in a few months. This will be more of a visual journal map, but hopefully it may one day be used as a fun guide for anyone planning to take an adventure to Palm Springs.

First Things First

Why am I making this map? For fun? A client? A gift? To showcase my favorite places? Etc.
For fun, and also to see how creative I can get by representing locations graphically.

Why am I the expert to create this map?
Because I love Palm Springs, the desert and illustration.

Who is my target audience?
People who love adventures, modernism and succulents.

Do I want my final project to be printed or digital? How is going to be used/held? What other constraints do I need to keep in mind moving forward? (Note type can be smaller on printed maps than when viewed on web)
I'd like it to be both digital and printed. Maybe take the digital version a step further by making it interactive on the web somehow. (My coding skills are a little rusty so this might be a good project to flex those muscles a bit too)

What level of detail do I need to include? (Names, addresses, contact info, street names, website, hours, descriptions, color coding, etc.)
I definitely want to include a minimal amour of detail. My challenge will be what to represent graphically and when to add just a street or interstate name.

Dear class, I need your help/expertise/guidance on how to…
I am looking forward to all the feed back along with any inspiration websites and images you all come across that may help support my theme. Thanks in advanced!

I love illustrated maps, below are just a few maps I found that I was really inspired by. I definitely want to keep to a mid-century modern esthetic but I'll inject my personality as well.

Assignment #1: Hand Drawn Map

Revisiting Palm Springs - image 1 - student project

My hand drawn map depicts my route to my favorite local coffee house, Augie's Coffee. Instead of showing street names, I wanted to show my favorite landmarks I pass on my way. This includes the orange groves by my house, a large university planter of agaves, a local donut shop and then finally ending up at Augie's Coffee. My favorite red building in the city, see below.
